This morning I was contemplating the things I could write here. My gf found out I was ranting on my dA journal, so now I need to entertain her. Which is why I had this idea.
This is the list of My Top 7 Most Memorable Video Game Moments.
Note that these are MY most memorable moments, which means that you might disagree. If you do, or have your own to share, please don't forget to comment (for all you tropers out there, that translates to YMMV [link] ). For those who will read all this, I will hide a keyword in this text, so copy the keyword in your comment to show you've read it all ^^.
Naturally, spoilers ahead.
My Top 7 Most Memorable Video Game Moments
#7 - Finishing Super Mario 64
Now before I hear some of you call lame on this, let me first iterate that SM64 was NOT the first game I finished. Like most of you out there I played all of the great classics, such as Metroid, The Legend of Zelda and even Pong (my friend had an old Atari and it was great).
However, I never really cared about the storyline (if there was one), and SM64 was the first game I really tried getting into (not like that). So, the moment I destroyed Bowser at the end of the game, and the moment the victory music started playing as Mario quite gaily started doing his triple-jump to start flying, my passion for video games struck deep. Sure, I loved video games before that, but I was never passionate about them. Until then.
#6 - Getting lost for the first time in Vivec
Nothing particularly special here. I just remember the very first time I played Morrowind, the game that would eventually become on of my favourites, I got lost in Vivec.
"Sure, everyone does."
It took me three realtime days to get out (not 72 hours, just the span of a weekend, you know what I mean). I kept turning around in circles! What makes this memorable? Well, that was my first experience in a game I've accumulated countless hours of gameplay in.
#5 - 0.002 sec difference in Midnight Club 3
Me and my friend were playing Midnight Club 3, a game where the average speed is 250MPH and where every second contains thousands of moments. These moments happen at every millisecond. See, most games consider milliseconds in pairs or triples: if you get a time of 0.003s, then the millisecond after you will get 0.003s or 0.007 or something like that. However, MC3 counts every millisecond individually.
Couple speeds of over 250MPH with the millisecond individuality principle, and the fact that me and my friend crossed the finish line at a 0.002s interval is incredible (from a comp. sci. major point of view). Why is this memorable? 0.002s interval on multiplayer. We spent roughly the next 5 minutes high-fiveing.
#4 - The Christmas level in Elite Beat Agents
Holy mother of God.
I am not one who is ashamed to admit my feelings (being emotionally scarred and traumatized and all), but this is the only time I've cried in a video game.
Imagine a game where the most serious situation encountered is getting a pregnant lady to the hospital aboard some sort of radioactive flying taxi. You do this by dancing. You also get to help a girl go steady with a guy by dancing, help a filmmaker make a movie called Romancing Meowzilla by dancing, change the weather by dancing (umm...), help a golddigger get laid by dancing (though this one is subtly implied)(also, k3yvvord is "kookie"), help a 17th century renaissance painter find his muse by dancing.
And then they throw the Christmas level.
It goes roughly along these lines: daddy needs to leave for work, little girl asks him to bring her a teddy bear, promise to be home by Christmas, mushy stuff. Six months later, little girl talks about how excited... well, here's the transcript:
Me: I wonder what wacky situation we'll get in. Probably help the father get back home in time for Christmas.
Girl: Mommy,
Mom: Lucy... let's not talk about daddy, honey. Daddy got into an accident, and he's not coming home.
Girl: Daddy's coming home! HE PROMISED!
Mom: Lucy, don't you understand?! FORGET ABOUT DADDY!! ...it's hard for me too...
At that moment I would probably have screamed "WHAT", but I had to keep from crying if I wanted to get through this level. And boy was it hard. It was hard for me even while typing this. See for yourself: [link]
#3 - The ending of Half-Life²: Episode 2
This one is a HUGE spoiler for those who haven't played the game, so I won't say it here. For those who have played... holy Shit on a Stick I can't wait for HL²: Ep3.
#2 - Fighting King Dodongo in The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
So LoZ in 3D was great. Me and my friend, we were quite young back then. And we breezed through the first and second dungeons. Queen Gohma was a surprise (we never fought something that big before), but we defeated her. Then came the ominous words "Infernal Dinosaur: King Dodongo", and we kinda freaked out. I mean, did you see that thing?! I mean, sure, we were 9 years old, but that thing was epic. Which brings me to...
#1 - Every freaking deathmatch I had in Halo 2 / Halo 3 with my friends
Seriously, some of my fondest memories are from those two games. I always thought the games themselves were okay and not that awesome, but me and two of my friends, :falderas: and zazu, we played Halo 2 for years. We just loved deathmatch, and while I dominated the battlefield, there are quite a few number of times they got the upper hand. We all had our skills (me close-range weps, fal snipers, and zazu had rifles), and we had a lot of fun.
Eventually, school became much more tedious and we stopped playing. But when Halo 3 came out (or rather, when I got it), we started playing again a few times. Good times.
So that was my Top 7 Most Memorable Video Game Moments. I hope you liked it, and if you have your own to share, don't hesitate to comment!
